Dover, DE
Rick Viers has been around the NASCAR garage since 1989. After winning the track title at Old Dominan Speedway in Virginia, Viers landed a mechanics job with Harry Gant.
During his career, Viers has worked on teams for Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, and Ward Burton. He has spent the last three years as Crew Chief for Elton Sawyer in the Busch Grand National Series. A position that saw him at the helm in bringing the team a top five finish in the Championship Standings.
2002 once again marked a change for Viers, as he accepted the Chew Chief spot for Johnny Sauter on the AC Delco team housed at Richard Childress Racing. A car that saw Todd Berrier and Kevin Harvick bring back-to-back Rookie Of The Year & Championship titles. Berrier and the majority of the team moved up to the Cup Series with Jeff Green, leaving Viers to head up a rookie driver, and a new team.
"We brought in a few new people, but the program is still the same, this is still an RCR race team. I worked for RCR in 1995 and 1996 with Dale Earnhardt, so I know how this organization works, so we intended to pick up where it left off" notes Viers.
Understanding the organization does not allow for the inexperience of Rookie Johnny Sauter. "With Johnny being a rookie, it is just like any other rookie, we have to learn to communicate well. We have to focus on bringing that level of communication up to the next level from when Johnny ran ASA. Adjusting to working with a talented rookie, Viers had to adjust to working as a Crew Chief for a large organization. "You have a mindset of how you want your race team to be run, With Richards’ shop it is a lot bigger, and more people, it is structured different with a shop foreman and a shop manager. The smaller team just has the crew chief. It allows me to work
more on the race cars, and what we need to do to win".
In the twenty-seven races this season Sauter has driven twenty-six, he is currently Sixteenth in points with one win, three top fives, and four top ten finishes, Respectable, but below expectations for the team and the organization. "We have been off to a rocky start, we as a group, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves, we keep looking forward."
A key moment for the team was the win at Chicago land speedway, the win refocused the team, and helped to over come some of the early season difficulties. It is evident, that Viers is in control of all aspects of the team, he demands the best form those under his leadership, but no
more than he demands of himself.
With a win under their belt, the team, with Viers at the Helm, focuses on moving up in the points, and prepares to mount a charge for the title in 2003.
