FOX Fantasy NASCAR Picks for Talladega

In previous weeks with our FOX Fantasy Auto roster, we sometimes picked drivers that started toward the front of the field on race day because we wanted the finish points. That’s not the case with the GEICO 500 this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. We are focusing solely on place differential points with our roster this weekend, and that means picking cars that start near the back. There’s going to be hundreds of roster combinations for this game on Sunday, and how good each is will change literally every single lap. These races are so unpredictable that we recommend not stressing over your Fantasy NASCAR rosters too much–just set one and enjoy the show.

Last week at Richmond, our official Fantasy Racing Online FOX team ended up with 177 points. We received solid points for all of our picks except one: Ryan Blaney. Still, we maintained pace with the leaders in this game and moved up a little bit, into 3,946th place overall and 6th in our private group.

Jamie McMurray ($9,700) – Jamie McMurray has been very Ryan Newman-esque this season in that he has just been a consistent, top 15 finisher. Jamie’s best finish thus far in 2016 has been 10th (at Fontana) but he also has just two results worse than 17th (Atlanta and Martinsville) and has yet to come home in a spot worse than 23rd. For the GEICO 500 on Sunday, Jamie Mac will start from 30th, which makes him a great option here in the FOX Fantasy Auto game due to the place differential points potential. Jamie is a two-time winner here at Talladega Superspeedway and finishes inside the top 10 in about one in every four starts here. With that being said, even just a 15th-place run here on Sunday out of this #1 team will still net FOX Fantasy owners 41 points, so in terms of big payoff potential, McMurray is one of the best this weekend.

Kevin Harvick ($13,700) – Honestly, Harvick is a “must pick” in FOX Fantasy Auto this week. We all know that this #4 Chevrolet typically has the most speed in it on a week-by-week basis, and the fact that Harvick has only finished worse than 15th once in his last seven starts at Talladega makes him just  a great pick overall. Also, “Happy” ended up 4th in this year’s Daytona 500 back in February, so you know this team has a good restrictor plate package. What makes him a “must pick,” though, was his qualifying effort on Saturday; Harvick will start the GEICO 500 from the 29th starting spot and should get us plenty of place differential points.

Kyle Busch ($12,600) – This #18 team has been a top 5 machine all season long and there’s no reason to think that will change just because we’re at a restrictor plate track. Rowdy does have one victory here at Talladega (back in 2008) but has notched just four total top 5 finishes here in his twenty-one career starts. The good news? Three of those came in the last seven events here. Rowdy was able to come home 3rd in this year’s Daytona 500 and we’d love to see a similar run out of him here at Talladega on Sunday. He starts 17th, which gives us the potential for some place differential points, and has finished 12th or better in five of the last seven races at this track. Rowdy is also one of those drivers that likes to make his way toward the front and stay there as soon as the green flag drops, and those are the best fantasy options at these big superspeedways (in our opinion).

Danica Patrick ($6,500) – Like we said, we’re going for the place differential points this weekend. Danica Patrick qualified 37th for this weekend’s GEICO 500, and as far as all of the drivers that are starting 30th or worse, Danica has the 2nd-best car and team behind Jamie McMurray. So while you could reach for someone like David Ragan or David Gilliland, we’re going to go with the better team in this position. Another reason we kind of like Danica on Sunday is because she finishes races here at Talladega. Yeah, she’s never ended up better than 19th at this track over six career starts, but she has only one DNF on her record here and has finished on the lead lap in all four races at Talladega over the last two seasons.

Clint Bowyer ($7,400) – We’re throwing the hail mary here. All season long we’ve ragged on Clint Bowyer and how terrible this #15 team and car is. However, when you get a race like Talladega where anything can happen, it’s sometimes worth a shot in the dark with a driver like Clint Bowyer. Let’s not forget that he is a two-time winner here at Talladega Superspeedway and owns a career average finish of 14.9 over his twenty career starts here. Clint has also ended up 10th or better in nine of the last twelve races here. Obviously he was in much better equipment for those events than he is in this weekend, but the opportunity is always there for the less fortunate teams to do well in these races. Remember, Regan Smith ended up finishing 8th in this year’s Daytona 500, and Michael McDowell finished 15th in that race. For Sunday’s GEICO 500, Bowyer will roll off the grid from the 34th starting spot, so if he can just muster a 20th-place finish, that will be 35 points in the FOX Fantasy Auto game.

Talladega Final Yahoo! Fantasy NASCAR Rankings and Picks

Photo Credit: Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images

The nice part about the Yahoo! Fantasy Auto Racing game at a track like Talladega Superspeedway is the whole locking in your roster before qualifying. It’s nice because it limits your options to pick from on race day. When it comes to the big restrictor plate races, anything and everything can happen during the race, and it wouldn’t be overly surprising if a guy like Matt DiBenedetto had another top 10 run here on Sunday (like it was back at Bristol). If you’re like us, you pretty much knew who you were going to start this weekend before locking in, so we’d recommend just going with your gut picks and enjoy the race.

Almost two in three Yahoo! teams have Dale Earnhardt, Jr. on them (including our’s), which is really not surprising at all. Now the question becomes how many of those teams are going to start him. Doing that would be the safest play here at Talladega on Sunday because Junior is simply the best driver at these big restrictor plate tracks. However, as we saw at Daytona earlier this year, he’s not prone to wrecking or having mechanical issues, and if the #88 Chevrolet ends up with problems in Sunday’s GEICO 500, that opens up the door for a lot of points to be made up by other teams.

Our other A Group driver this weekend is Denny Hamlin, this year’s Daytona 500 champion. Denny also won the spring race here at Talladega two years ago. Our Fantasy Racing Online Yahoo! team has gotten off to a terrible start this season and we’re sitting pretty far back. We’ll think we would probably regret it if we benched him, though, so we’re going to roll with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. on Sunday.

Final A Group Rankings: (1) Dale Earnhardt, Jr., (2) Jimmie Johnson, (3) Kyle Busch, (4) Denny Hamlin, (5) Brad Keselowski, (6) Kevin Harvick, (7) Kurt Busch, (8) Joey Logano, (9) Matt Kenseth

There have been at least a couple races this season that we had Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. as our sleeper pick of the week, put him on our Yahoo! roster, but then never pulled the trigger and started him on race day. That’s going to change this weekend. Statistically, Stenhouse is the best pick here at Talladega Superspeedway, believe it or not. In five career starts here, Ricky has an average finish of 12.2, which is the best among all drivers (yes, even Dale Earnhardt, Jr.). Usually the #17 Ford qualifies near the back and stays there all race, but this weekend that didn’t happen. Stenhouse made it to the final round of that special qualifying session and will start Sunday’s GEICO 500 from the 6th place. Being able to run a strong qualifying lap here at Talladega should translate into strong race speed as well. So one of our B picks is already set, although we fully expect Stenhouse to drop back as soon as the green flag drops on Sunday. Hopefully he can go up there and lead a lap and get us some bonus points, that’d be nice.

Now we have to decide between Jamie McMurray, Kasey Kahne, and Danica Patrick. All three have had their ups and downs here at Talladega Superspeedway, but from a statistical standpoint, Jamie McMurray is probably the best pick because of his two wins here. That #1 team has also been a consistently-finishing machine all season long. On the other hand, Kasey Kahne might have the most speed in his car, as he qualified 11th this weekend. With that being said, Kasey started 2nd in both Talladega races last season and finished 34th and 19th. As far as Danica goes, that start would just be trying to catch lightning in a bottle, and we’re not willing to do that. She’s never finished better than 19th at Talladega. We’re going with Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Jamie McMurray in the B Group on Sunday.

Final B Group Rankings: (1) Carl Edwards (2) Martin Truex, Jr., (3) Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., (4) Austin Dillon, (5) Paul Menard, (6) Ryan Newman, (7) Jamie McMurray, (8) Kasey Kahne, (9) Aric Almirola, (10) Kyle Larson, (11) Tony Stewart, (12) Casey Mears, (13) Trevor Bayne, (14) Greg Biffle, (15) A.J. Allmendinger, (16) Danica Patrick, (17) Clint Bowyer

Yahoo! C Group Pick and Final Rankings for Talladega

Honestly, with the C Group drivers this weekend, you’re probably just starting one and hoping for the best. It would be foolish to waste a Chase Elliott or Ryan Blaney start in a race as unpredictable as Talladega, and that goes both ways: might as well try and capture a good finish from one of the other C Group drivers that you probably won’t think about more than once or twice a year. Our two C Group picks for Sunday’s GEICO 500 were Brian Scott and Landon Cassill, and we told ourselves we would start the one that qualified better. So it looks like we’re going with Brian Scott on Sunday.

Final C Group Rankings: (1) Chase Elliott, (2) Ryan Blaney, (3) Brian Scott, (4) Regan Smith (5) Landon Cassill, (6) Chris Beuscher, (7) Matt DiBenedetto, (8) Michael Waltrip, the rest

Talladega NASCAR Fantasy Live Picks

The starting lineup for this weekend’s GEICO 500 isn’t too favorable when it comes to making a roster for NASCAR.com Fantasy Live. Overall the best restrictor plate drivers will be starting inside the top 20 on Sunday, while all of the “bottom dwellers” and low-dollar drivers will occupy the rear of the field. This is a typical starting lineup for other race weekends, but we were really hoping for some solid fantasy picks to qualify poorly on Saturday so that we could capitalize on place differential points on Sunday. Oh, well.

The Fantasy Racing Online NASCAR.com team had a decent (not great) week at Richmond last Sunday, scoring a total of 245 points. We didn’t have Kyle Busch or Carl Edwards on our roster so that was why. We’re sitting in 18,556th place overall in the 92.14 percentile with 2080.5 points on the season. Hopefully a good week at Talladega can help us a bit.

Jimmie Johnson ($26.50) – “Six Time” went up another quarter after the Richmond race, so that means we have him locked in at a price that is $0.75 less than market value. We’re looking to the future and we’re not willing to give that up, so he’s staying on our roster for Talladega despite qualifying inside the top 5 for this year’s GEICO 500. Hopefully the #48 Chevrolet can make its way toward the front and lead some laps on Sunday to make up for it. The good news is that Johnson is a two-time winner here at Talladega Superspeedway and has led double-digit lap totals in six of the last seven races here. He usually has a car that can contend for the win when we stop here, and we believe that is the case this weekend as well. In this race last year, Johnson also started 5th, and then he went on to lead 50 laps en-route to a 2nd-place finish. If he could replicate that here on Sunday, we’d be thrilled.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. ($28.00) – Don’t let us down, Junior. We don’t think it’s necessary to rattle off the statistics that Earnhardt has accumulated here at Talladega Superspeedway, so we’re not even going to spend the time. The #88 Chevrolet is running one of Dale’s best chassis this weekend, and he’s starting 3rd for this year’s GEICO 500. Junior has also been consistently fast all weekend long and that should have the rest of the garage area worried. It’s certainly possible that the #88 team will go out and dominate here on Sunday, and that’s what we’re hoping happens. We need Junior to lead a bunch of laps for this pick to work out, but we’re confident that that will happen.

Kevin Harvick ($27.75) – This weekend Harvick is going to be one of the most popular picks in the Fantasy NASCAR leagues that award points based on place differential. He qualified 29th for Sunday’s GEICO 500, but the #4 Chevrolet is much better than that. This team came home with a top 5 finish in this year’s Daytona 500 and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if they ended up near the front once again here on Sunday. In fact, over the last two years here at Talladega, Harvick actually has the best average finish among all drivers and hasn’t finished worse than 15th. He ran 8th in this event one year ago after starting 24th, and in the fall race of 2014, Harvick started 39th and ended up 9th. It’s all about where you finish (not where you start), and the #4 Chevrolet should be where it typically is when the checkered flag waves this weekend: toward the front.

Cole Whitt ($5.25) – When it comes to these very low dollar drivers this weekend, it’s really just pick one and hope for the best. We’re going with Cole Whitt in the GEICO 500 on Sunday because he’s the only one we could afford. However, we’re not too upset about it because Cole actually has a decent record here at Talladega as of late; in the last four races at this track, Cole Whitt hasn’t ended up worse than 22nd, and he actually finished 13th in this exact race one year ago. He’ll start 36th here on Sunday, but if Whitt can stay out of trouble during the race, he might be one of the best low-dollar options for Talladega.

Danica Patrick ($12.50) – Our plan this whole week was to go with Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. in this spot, but he went out and qualified 6th on Saturday so that kind of blew that plan. So we’re going with his girlfriend instead. Danica hasn’t had a great run here at Talladega over his six-race career here–her best finish is 19th–but she also hasn’t been too terrible. She tends to stick to her gameplan and finish on the lead lap, and sometimes that’s all you can ask out of your Fantasy NASCAR picks at tracks like Daytona and Talladega. Danica will start near the back of the pack for Sunday’s GEICO 500, but if she can keep her nose clean, a mid-20s (or better) finish isn’t out of the question at all. So, between finish points and place differential points, that’d be a nice little payoff for a driver that only costs $12.50.

Race Winner: Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
Manufacturer: Chevrolet

Talladega Yahoo! Fantasy NASCAR Strategy Picks

We have our second restrictor plate race of 2016 this weekend with the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. Some Fantasy NASCAR players love these races, some hate them. As far as the Yahoo! Fantasy Auto Racing game goes, we have the same strategy at pretty much all of the Talladega and Daytona races: start save. We usually pick the cars that we have a lot of starts left with and those that we’re probably not going to use all nine starts with for the season. These races also allow you to root for some drivers that you typically don’t, simply because they’re on your roster.

Yahoo! A Group Picks for Talladega

hamlin-burnout-sprint-unlimitedDenny Hamlin (9 starts remaining) – Over the last couple of seasons, the #11 Toyota has been one of the best in the restrictor plate races. Over at Daytona, Hamlin finished 2nd, 6th, 4th, and 3rd before he most recently got to victory lane in this year’s Daytona 500. He hasn’t been that good here at Talladega, but Denny won this race two years ago and ended up finishing 9th in the May race last season. Momentum-wise, he had a good run at Richmond last week (6th), which was his only top 10 finish in all of April. We still have all nine Denny Hamlin starts left in Yahoo! so we’re going to go ahead and roll with him this weekend despite the #11 team not being the best fantasy pick over the last two months.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (8 starts remaining) – Junior is going to be on a whole lot of rosters this weekend, but you simply can’t count him out at these big super speedways. He disappointed fantasy owners in this year’s season-opening Daytona 500 but Junior is still the best racer at these tracks–and he has one of the strongest cars, too. Earnhardt is the defending winner of this Talladega race and he ended up finishing 2nd in the fall event here last season. He has also led at least 26 laps in each of the last five races at this track. If you want to be different and try to gain some points by not picking Junior this weekend, be our guest, just don’t complain if he wins and you fall back even further in your league.

As far as the other A Group drivers, we view pretty much everyone as fair game this week except for Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch. While those two should be strong here on Sunday, they’re too valuable in other races and we’re already down to 7 starts left with each.

Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. (9 starts remaining) – It’s probably starting to sound like a broken record but, once again, we didn’t pull the trigger on Stenhouse last week at Richmond and he went on to have a great race before that loose wheel kind of ruined his day. So maybe it was a good thing we didn’t start him. We fully intend on starting Ricky this weekend, though, so hopefully this #17 team can keep up the speed at a track that has been very kind to them over the years. Believe it or not, Stenhouse owns the best average finish here (12.2) of all active drivers–and yes that includes Dale Earnhardt, Jr.! It should be noted that Stenhouse only has five career starts at Talladega, but with only one finish worse than 13th, that’s still pretty dang impressive. He usually doesn’t qualify well or look great during the race, but Stenhouse knows how to stay out of trouble and be there at the end.

Paul Menard (6 starts remaining) – Yeah, we’re already down to six Paul Menard starts remaining, but he’s just really good here at Talladega. So how we’re going to approach this race weekend is that Paul Menard is going to be our backup plan. If two or three of our other B Group drivers look absolutely terrible, we will use Paul Menard as a last resort. Or if the #27 Chevrolet happens to look super fast and starts up front, we might use Menard anyway. In the last five Talladega races, Paul has posted four top 10 finishes, so if you have 7 or more starts left with him, you should probably put him on your Yahoo! roster this weekend.

Jamie McMurray (8 starts remaining) – Jamie Mac used to be considered one of the best restrictor plate drivers in the series, but that title was short-lived and he hasn’t had too many great showings as of late. However, McMurray finished 11th here in this race at Talladega last season, and let’s not forget that Jamie won the 2013 fall race here as well. One other reason we like the #1 Chevrolet his weekend is because of how consistent this team has been all season long. Yeah, they’ve only posted one top 10 finish, but they also haven’t ended up worse than 23rd and Jamie has been a teens pick all year long. We view McMurray as a relatively safe start save B Group pick here at Talladega, so we’re rolling with him this weekend.

Kasey Kahne (8 starts remaining) – With our fourth B Group selection, we’re going with the Hendrick Motorsports horsepower. We still have 8 Kasey Kahne starts remaining, so why not? Kasey ran 13th in this year’s season-opening Daytona 500 and he was pretty strong here at Talladega last season–at least in terms of qualifying. Kahne started 2nd in both events here in 2015, although he ended up finishing 34th and 19th. Still, Kahne wound up 8th and 12th in the two 2014 Talladega races, and you never really know how is races are going to play out. In terms of average driver rating, Kahne ranks 5th among active drivers here at Talladega over the last four events.

We’d like to use Carl Edwards or Martin Truex, Jr. here at Talladega, but it’s simply not worth the risk of them wrecking. These Talladega races are far too unpredictable and those Edwards and Truex starts in the B Group are far too valuable this season. We would like to use Austin Dillon this weekend but we’re already down to six starts left with him, and we might need all of them by the end of the year.

EDIT: We’re going with Danica Patrick instead of Paul Menard. The rest of our A Group and B Group picks remain the same.

Yahoo! C Group Picks for Talladega

With your C Group drivers this weekend, just pick a couple and hope for the best. We highly advise that you do not use Chase Elliott or Ryan Blaney on the restrictor plate tracks. They definitely have the best cars among the C Group drivers, but Elliott and Blaney starts are way too valuable to use them at these unpredictable races. Anyway, we’re going with Landon Cassill and Regan Smith in the C Group this weekend. Cassill finishing a respectable 23rd in this year’s Daytona 500, and he ended up 11th and 4th in the two races here at Talladega in 2014. We’re going with Regan Smith because he ended up 8th in this year’s Daytona 500 and in his last two starts here at Talladega he has finished 6th and 5th. Yeah, past results don’t really mean a lot here–and those finishes came in 2013 and 2012–but it’s better than nothing when making early week picks.

NOTE: We initially had Cole Whitt listed instead of Regan Smith but that has been edited.

EDIT: After practice on Friday, we have decided to pair Brian Scott with Landon Cassill.

Richmond Race Day NASCAR Betting Picks

One thing to keep in mind this weekend is that there have been plenty of winners at Richmond International Raceway over the last four years. In fact, we haven’t had a repeat victor in the last eight races at this track. Those who have been to victory lane over that span are (from most recent on): Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Carl Edwartds, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, and Kyle Busch. And with Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400, one of the favorites can keep that streak alive: Jimmie Johnson. The three favorites on race day are him, Kevin Harvick, and Kyle Busch, and they’re all listed at 5-to-1 odds.

Last week at Bristol, we had a rough day overall in terms of Fantasy NASCAR, but our betting picks played out nicely (click here to see those picks). Our “Bet of The Day” cashed, bringing that pick to 4-2 overall on the season, and the Kurt Busch (+130) over Martin Truex, Jr. head-to-head bet was a nice little cash as well.

Race Day Betting Picks for the Richmond Toyota Owners 400

The driver odds in this post are accurate as of 10:00 am ET on April 24, 2016 and came from Bovada.

BET OF THE DAY:  Kurt Busch (-110) over Martin Truex, Jr. – We have Kurt Busch as a potential race winner today (see below), while we have Martin Truex, Jr.  right outside of the top 10 heading into the Toyota Owners 400. So this seems like a no-brainer. Weirdly enough, Truex is actually favored in this matchup (-120) despite the fact that he has just three top 10 finishes in his last eleven Richmond starts. Meanwhile, Kurt Busch is the defending winner of this race and has posted four top 10s in his last six races here at RIR. Momentum-wise, Busch wins in that department as well; the only top 5 finish that Truex has this year is his 2nd-place run at Daytona, and over the last six Sprint Cup races, this #78 team has only been able to muster one finish better than 11th. The #41 crew, on the other hand, has six top 10s in the eight 2016 races that we have ran with just one result worse than 13th. Truex may have had great long run speed during practice on Saturday, but Kurt Busch was close on the speed chart, and the former tends to disappoint on race days (at least this season).

[mk_fancy_title color=”#0c0c0c” size=”30″ font_weight=”bolder” font_family=”Economica” font_type=”google” align=”center”]Our “Bet of the Day” Picks are 4-2 this year.[/mk_fancy_title]
[vc_progress_bar values=”%5B%7B%22label%22%3A%22Wins%22%2C%22value%22%3A%2266.7%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22bar_green%22%7D%2C%7B%22label%22%3A%22Losses%22%2C%22value%22%3A%2233.3%22%2C%22color%22%3A%22bar_red%22%7D%5D” units=”%”]

Kurt Busch (+1700) – Being able to grab Kurt Busch at 17-to-1 odds this morning was a great feeling because there’s so much to like about the #41 Chevrolet today. Not only is Kurt the defending winner of this Richmond race, but he dominated the Toyota Owners 400 last year, leading 291 of the 400 laps. Additionally, he has another fast car this time around, as Busch posted the 6th-best ten-lap average during Happy Hour on Saturday and had one of the best cars on twenty- and thirty-lap runs as well. We should see long green flag runs here on Sunday so that should play well into Kurt’s hands. Also, let’s not forget that this #41 team is off to a great start in 2016, with six top 10 finishes in the first eight races. They’re also coming off their best finish of the season last week at Bristol (3rd). We have Kurt Busch as a top 5 car heading into the race today, so getting him at +1700 is awesome. NOTE: We locked in that +1700 at 9:00 am ET today, by 10:00 am Kurt Busch was at +1500.

Carl Edwards (-115) over Matt Kenseth – On one hand here we have a guy that has been the perfect example of consistency over the last twenty six Sprint Cup races. Carl Edwards has completed every single lap over all of those races and has the best average finish of any driver in the Sprint Cup series. He’s also coming off of a dominating win at Bristol and has only finished worse than 7th once in the 2016 Sprint Cup season. Matt Kenseth, meanwhile, simply can’t catch a break. He has led in all but one race this season, and that lone race is the only one that he has finished inside the top 10 (Phoenix). It’s not even surprising anymore when the #20 Toyota has trouble on race day. Edwards hasn’t ran great here at Richmond as of late but that should change here today in the Toyota Owners 400. He has a nice top 5 starting spot and looked good on the practice charts this weekend as well. Matt Kenseth starts 13th (as if he needed more bad luck) but has been good here at Richmond as of late, including a dominating win here last fall. Matt Kenseth is going to break out of his funk here soon, but even if he does today at RIR, we still think Carl Edwards finishes higher than him.
