Richmond Final Yahoo! Fantasy NASCAR Rankings and Picks

Photo Credit: Sean Gardner/NASCAR via Getty Images

With the starting lineup for Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 being set on Practice #1 speeds thanks to the rain on Friday, it probably wouldn’t be the worst strategy in the world to just start the drivers that have the best starting spot on your Yahoo! rosters. Let’s not forget that the last three Richmond races have all been won by drivers starting 3rd or better, and 78% of the winners at this track have starting inside the top 10. This is a 0.75-mile D-shaped “short” track that acts like a speedway, and because the Sprint Cup teams only had one practice session on Saturday, we think it would be best to take track history into account a little bit more when making Fantasy NASCAR picks this weekend.

Last Sunday’s race at Bristol was another tough one for the Fantasy Racing Online team, as we started Kyle Busch in the A Group and he wrecked out. We were able to salvage some points thanks to Ryan Newman (9th) and Paul Menard (15th) in the B Group, though. We’re sitting in the 29th percentile, though, so it’s time for a good week and a bunch of points at Richmond. This Yahoo! Auto Racing game is a marathon, not a sprint, but it’s time to pick up the pace.

The definite better pick our of our two A Group drivers this weekend–Kyle Busch and Joey Logano–is Kyle Busch. However, we’re already down to seven starts left with this #18 Toyota, so starting him for the Toyota Owners 400 race at Richmond on Sunday would already put us down to six with 75% of the schedule remaining. Joey Logano is really solid at this race track, but he’s been pretty unpredictable this season and is on this weird streak of single-digit finish one week, double-digit finish the next. If that keeps going on Sunday, he’s due for a single-digit result. Logano also starts 2nd for this year’s Toyota Owners 400, while Kyle Busch starts 9th. But that #18 Toyota had top 3 speed in Happy Hour on Saturday while Logano ranked 15th in ten-lap average. We’re going for max points with our roster this weekend and to do that we need to start Kyle Busch, so that’s what we’re going to do.

Final A Group Rankings: (1) Kevin Harvick, (2) Jimmie Johnson, (3) Kyle Busch, (4) Kurt Busch, (5) Joey Logano, (6) Brad Keselowski, (7) Denny Hamlin, (8) Dale Earnhardt, Jr., (9) Matt Kenseth

We’re happy with our gamble to throw A.J. Allmendinger on our roster for Richmond. On Friday he was 10th-fastest in Practice #1, which means he’s going to start Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 from a solid top 10 starting spot. The #47 Chevrolet also had solid speed during the Happy Hour practice session on Saturday as well, ranking 8th in both overall speed and ten-lap average. A.J. also seemed pretty happy with his car, and that never happens. This #47 team’s strength is on the short tracks and that’s going to show once again this weekend. If nothing goes wrong, Allmendinger might have a shot at a top 10 finish here on Sunday. He ran 13th in this race one year ago.

Carl Edwards is once again the class of the B Group field and looks like a solid top 5 and potentially race-winning threat. We still advise saving his starts but we know how hard that can be right now. We don’t think the #19 Toyota is good enough to dominate this race like it did last week, though. Anyway, Truex might crack the top 10 on Sunday and might now, so once again we would recommend keeping him on your bench if you rostered him this weekend. Kasey Kahne looked good in Happy Hour on Saturday but keep in mind that he typically races worse than he starts/practices. At best we think Kahne will finish 13th or so in this year’s Toyota Owners 400.

Allmendinger is our definite start of the weekend, while Jamie McMurray is definitely on the bench due to his 27th-place starting spot. So now we have to choose between Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Kyle Larson. Between those two, Stenhouse is actually the safer option, as he has five finishes of 16th or better in the last seven Sprint Cup races. He will also start 12th on Sunday. Kyle Larson always has that major upside potential, though, and was faster than Stenhouse (in terms of ten-lap average) during Happy Hour on Saturday. Larson has also never finished worse than 16th in his three Sprint Cup starts here at Richmond, while Stenhouse has just one finish better than 16th in six career starts here. Right now our gut tells us to go with A.J. Allmendinger and Kyle Larson as our B Group drivers in this weekend’s Toyota Owners 400.

Final B Group Rankings: (1) Carl Edwards (2) Martin Truex, Jr., (3) A.J. Allmendinger, (4) Kasey Kahne, (5) Ryan Newman, (6) Kyle Larson, (7) Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., (8) Austin Dillon, (9) Jamie McMurray, (10) Greg Biffle, (11) Tony Stewart, (12) Paul Menard, (13) Trevor Bayne, (14) Aric Almirola, (15) Danica Patrick, (16) Casey Mears, (17) Clint Bowyer

Tony Stewart announcing his return to the Sprint Cup Series on Thursday really threw a wrench in all Yahoo Fantasy NASCAR players’ plans. We were able to use Brian Vickers and Ty Dillon when we could, so we’re left with eight starts remaining with both Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney now–which are our two C Group drivers for Richmond. The #24 Chevrolet will start Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 from 23rd while the #21 Ford will roll off the grid in 29th. Blaney did look a little faster than Elliott in final practice on Saturday, but when it’s all said and done on Sunday, we think Chase is going to finish higher–and he has a much better chance of coming away with a surprise top 10 (or even top 5) result. We’re starting Chase Elliott on Sunday, although if you have Brian Scott on your roster, it’s definitely worth a long consideration on starting him. He could surprise some people this weekend.

Final C Group Rankings: (1) Chase Elliott, (2) Ryan Blaney, (3) Brian Scott, (4) Matt DiBenedetto, (5) Landon Cassill, (6) Chris Beuscher, (7) Michael McDowell, the rest

DraftKings Ultimate Value Fantasy NASCAR Drivers for Richmond

There are very few drivers that are going to come up through the field and have a shot at a top 5 finish this weekend because of how it all played out on Friday. We had the first practice session as scheduled, but then qualifying was rained out so the starting lineup for Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 was set by those initial practice speeds. The bad things for DraftKings players is that the best picks for this race all start toward the front, so we will have to forget about place differential points for some and instead try and capitalize on laps led and fastest lap points. There are some drivers that should make their way through the field on Sunday, though. Keep in mind that almost 80% of the winners here at Richmond have started inside the top 10, and each of the last three started 3rd or better. We also haven’t had a repeat winner at this track in the last four years (eight races).

Ultimate Value DraftKings Picks for the Richmond Toyota Owners 400

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. ($9,300) – While Kasey Kahne should have a permanent spot for DraftKings drivers to avoid (read about that here), Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is a consistent driver that you should definitely pick. The thing is, this #88 team always seems to struggle to find speed at the beginning of a race weekend. We didn’t even qualify this weekend and Junior still isn’t getting that great of a starting spot. But, like we’ve seen many times this year, it doesn’t really faze him. Hell, he started the Bristol race without any power and went two laps down, only to come back and finish 2nd. We still don’t see how that happened. Anyway, Junior starts 16th here at Richmond on Sunday, and while the #88 Chevrolet wasn’t the fastest on Saturday, we’re confident that this team will find the speed they need by the checkered flag on Sunday. Earnhardt has won three times here at Richmond in the Sprint Cup Series and just today won the Xfinity race. In the last Cup race here (last September), he finished 5th after starting 29th. Earnhardt, Jr. should be a solid DraftKings choice this weekend, and at only $9,300!? Steal.

Paul Menard ($6,700) – Paul Menard is one of the cheaper DraftKings options this weekend, and that works out great because he should give us plenty of place differential points on Sunday. This #27 Chevrolet started out pretty bad on Friday, and because of that Menard will start 26th for this year’s Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond. However, this #27 team seemed to turn things around on Saturday, as Paul quietly posted the 9th-best lap in Happy Hour while ranking 21st on the ten-lap average chart. He finished 15th in this race one year ago and has ended up 18th or better in five of the last eight Richmond races. Menard also has three top 15s in the last three Sprint Cup races overall, and that includes his only top 10 finish of the season thus far back at Martinsville.

Jimmie Johnson ($10,000) – We look at it this way: in terms of price, Jimmie Johnson is 7th this week. But in terms of points, he has the opportunity to be 1st. Going into Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400, we think the race is going to be won by either Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, or Kyle Busch. However, we’re leaning more toward Harvick and Johnson as the drivers that are going to lead the majority of this race, and, we we mentioned before, that’s where we need to target DraftKings points this weekend. Jimmie Johnson has won three times here at Richmond International Raceway and will start Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 from the 3rd place. He had the fastest lap in Happy Hour on Saturday and had the best ten-lap average as well. With as many solid low-dollar DraftKings options available this weekend, you should be able to easily afford some of the “top dogs” for Richmond, and we think Jimmie Johnson is going to give DraftKings owners a big return this weekend.

Ryan Blaney ($6,800) – At this price, Blaney is going to be on the majority of DraftKings rosters this weekend. He starts 29th, too, so you know everyone is going to be hopping all over the #21 Ford. However, we can’t really blame them, because it’s probably going to be the right pick. Heading into Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400, we have Ryan Blaney ranked as a top 15 threat, although the opportunity for him to run top 10 is there. With those finish points paired with the place differential points, we could get a huge return for not a lot of money. Blaney was 13th on the overall speed chart during Saturday’s lone practice session and ranked 10th in ten-lap average. The other rookie, Chase Elliott, should be a great choice in DraftKings this week as well. He starts 23rd and should be able to finish top 10 if he has an error-free race. Elliott costs a full $2,000 more than Blaney, though, at $8,800.

Martin Truex, Jr. ($8,500) – If you don’t want to go with Chase Elliott this weekend, or can’t quite fit his salary on your DraftKings roster, Martin Truex, Jr. should be a good pick for Richmond and is a little bit cheaper. This #78 team has had a tendency to under-perform this season, but with Truex starting 22nd for Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400, it’s going to take a wreck or some mechanical issue for him to do that again. The #78 Toyota was 7th-fastest during Saturday’s lone practice session and Truex laid down the 11th-best ten-lap average as well. His record at this race track is nowhere near stellar (average finish of 22nd over twenty career starts) but Martin has finished 10th in each of the last two Richmond spring races and has had three results inside that mark over his last five overall starts at this track. Even just a 15th-place run on Sunday would net Martin Truex, Jr. DraftKings owners 36 points.

FOX Fantasy NASCAR Picks for Richmond

Qualifying was rained out on Friday, so the starting lineup for this weekend’s race at Richmond International Raceway was set by Practice #1 speeds, which was held earlier that day. This wasn’t the best thing for us FOX Fantasy Auto players, though, because the fastest cars and the best Fantasy NASCAR picks are all starting up toward the front–thus limiting the possibility of getting place differential points on Sunday. There are some great picks that are starting mid-pack for the Toyota Owners 400, though, and really the roster for this race was one of the easiest we’ve picked all year.

Last week, our Fantasy Racing Online FOX Fantasy Auto team only scored 124 points due to Kyle Busch, Kyle Larson, and Matt Kenseth all crashing out of the race. So that was rough. We did have Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Chase Elliott, though, which helped soften the blow. We are now in 4,058th place overall and 6th in our private group.

Ryan Blaney ($5,200) – The #21 Ford was just 29th-fastest in Practice #1 on Friday, so that means Ryan Blaney is going to have to pass a lot of cars to get to the front on Sunday. During the final practice session on Saturday, though, it was apparent that Blaney really wasn’t as bad as he seemed the day before, as he ran the 13th-fastest lap and had the 10th-best ten-lap average. Blaney has never ran a Sprint Cup race here at Richmond, but he finished 10th at Phoenix earlier this year, and those two tracks are somewhat comparable. At the $5,200 price point, and the fact that Blaney starts 29th, the #21 Ford is a must pick for all FOX Fantasy Auto rosters. As of this posting, just 20.1% of teams have Blaney, but that should jump up quite a bit before the green flag waves on Sunday.

Chase Elliott ($6,100) – The FOX Fantasy Auto game is finally starting to get Chase Elliott’s salary to a more respectable level, but he is still majorly under-priced. And like we said with Ryan Blaney, the low price point and the mid-pack starting spot–Elliott will roll off the grid in 23rd on Sunday–makes the #24 Chevrolet a must pick for all rosters as well. Chase ran 16th in this race one year ago while driving the #25 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, and now he has an even better car underneath him. Additionally, Elliott finished top 5 in both XFinity races here at Richmond last season, and he even went to victory lane in one of them as well. Chase wasn’t the most impressive driver on the speed charts during practice on Saturday (20th-fastest) but we think he should be a top 10 threat during the race on Sunday. That’s going to equal some nice points in the FOX Fantasy Auto game. A whopping 63% of teams had Chase Elliott as of this posting, so if you want to avoid the #24 in case he wrecks or something, be our guest. We wouldn’t recommend it, though.

Kyle Busch ($13,100) – All of the good Fantasy NASCAR picks start up front this weekend, but Kyle Busch will roll off the grid in 9th for Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 so there’s a little bit of room for place differential points out of Rowdy. He’s a four-time winner here at Richmond International Raceway and owns the best average finish (7.1) among all active drivers at this race track. Kyle missed this race last season due to his leg injuries but he did end up racing here in the fall and finished 2nd to his teammate Matt Kenseth. The #18 Toyota has top 5 speed once again this weekend and should be a threat for the win as well. Kyle was 3rd in ten-lap average during Happy Hour and laid down the 3rd-fastest lap in that session as well. It’s rare for this team to have two bad weeks in a row so we’re betting that that doesn’t happen.

Martin Truex, Jr. ($10,900) – There’s basically three drivers in the field on Sunday that have the potential to get us double-digit place differential points. Those are the two rookies mentioned above and Martin Truex, Jr., who starts 22nd for this year’s Toyota Owners 400. We feel very confident in picking Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney this weekend, but we’re not feeling 100% sure on Truex. With that being said, it’s almost impossible to pass up those place differential points, as even a top 15 run out of this #78 team should net you mid-to-high 30s points. The good news is that Truex has finished top 10 in each of the last two spring races here at Richmond and he posted the 7th-fastest lap in Happy Hour on Saturday. In terms of ten-lap average, the #78 Chevrolet ranked 11th-best out of 38 cars. An 11th-place finish out of Truex in this year’s Toyota Owners 400–which is where we project he will end up–will net you 41 points in FOX Fantasy Auto.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. ($14,200) – With the four drivers we have listed above, you can afford any other driver to fill out your FOX Fantasy Auto roster so it really depends on what kind of strategy you want to take here. The way to score the most points in this game is to go with the drivers that will get you place differential points, and your best option with that route is Dale Earnhardt, Jr. He starts 17th for Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400, so a 9th-place finish–which is where we project the #88 Chevrolet will end up–will net you a total of 40 points. Any finish above that would be bonus. Or you can take the route of picking someone like Kevin Harvick, who starts on the pole for Sunday’s race. We have Harvick ranked 1st going into race day, and a win with the most laps led will give fantasy owners 45 total points. However, there’s no room for place differential points there. Both Earnhardt, Jr. and Kevin Harvick are three-time winners at this race track and it wouldn’t surprise us one bit if they both ended up top 5 here on Sunday.

Richmond NASCAR Fantasy Live Picks

The Toyota Owners 400 race title refers to the number of laps we’re running in Sunday’s race, not the distance. Richmond International Raceway is a 0.75-mile D-shaped short track that races like a speedway. At 400 total laps, that means we’re set to run 300 miles here on Sunday–a relatively short race. Qualifying was rained out on Friday so the starting lineup was set by Practice #1 speeds. Kevin Harvick will lead the field to the green this weekend and the best Fantasy NASCAR options at Richmond are pretty much all starting toward the front. This should be a great race to watch on Sunday.

Our Fantasy Racing Online team picked wrong last weekend by going with Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth–who both wrecked out at Bristol–instead of race winner Carl Edwards. We also dropped our typical low dollar driver in Matt DiBenedetto last weekend, and he ended up finishing top 10. It was just one of those races… We are now sitting in the 93.06th percentile with 1835.5 total points.

Kevin Harvick ($27.75) – We typically don’t like going with the pole sitter on our NASCAR.com Fantasy Live team, but at the shorter tracks it’s not as much of a gamble because of all the points available for leading laps. In order for this to work out, the Toyota Owners 400 needs to play out exactly like we’re hoping it does: that Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson combine to lead the majority of the race. We believe that the #4 Chevrolet and the #48 Chevrolet are the two fastest cars heading into Sunday’s race, and the start 1st and 3rd, respectively. Harvick is a three-time winner here at Richmond and finished 2nd in this race one year ago. He had the 2nd-best ten-lap average during Saturday’s lone practice session this weekend and sounds generally pleased with his car. Also, Richmond is comparable to Phoenix and Harvick led 139 laps there earlier this year en route to his only Sprint Cup victory of 2016 (so far). Kyle Busch is another good play in this spot as well as Carl Edwards.

Jimmie Johnson ($26.50) – We still have “Six Time” locked in at 50 cents less than his market value, but with the roster we’ve put together for Richmond, you have plenty of cap room to play with. Johnson was the fastest car in Saturday’s Happy Hour practice session and he also had the best ten-lap average during that practice as well. He’s no stranger to victory lane here at Richmond International Raceway, either: Jimmie has won three times here at RIR and is currently on a three-race streak of top 10 finishes at this track–including his 3rd-place run in this event one year ago. Johnson hasn’t led any laps at Richmond since the 2012 season but we expect that to change here on Sunday.

Chase Elliott ($19.25) – We’re going to try a different strategy this weekend and go with a couple of mid-range drivers. The first of those is going to be Chase Elliott, who we think can end up with a top 10 finish here on Sunday. This #24 Chevrolet has been stout lately, as Chase is fresh off of his second straight top 5 finish at Bristol, and he has posted four top 10s in the last five Sprint Cup races as well. As far as Richmond goes, Chase finished 5th and 1st in the two Xfinity races here last season, and he actually ran in this race on the Cup side in the #25 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. He finished a respectable 16th after starting there as well. This weekend he’s going to start the Toyota Owners 400 from 23rd, so we’re hoping to capitalize on some place differential points as well.

Matt DiBenedetto ($6.25) – We’re going back with DiBenedetto as our low dollar driver this weekend, because why not. This team seems to thrive on the shorter tracks, as evidenced by their 20th-place run at Phoenix earlier this year and, most recently, their 6th-place finish at Bristol. Obviously there’s a very low chance that the #83 Toyota is going to wind up finishing that high here at Richmond, but a solid mid-20s result isn’t out of the question for this team. DiBenedetto starts 36th for Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 and had the 28th-best lap during practice on Saturday, so there’s the potential for a few place differential points as well.

ryan-blaney-2015-charlotteRyan Blaney ($17.00) – Again, we’re trying a different roster setup this weekend, so our second mid-range driver will be Ryan Blaney. He starts 29th for this weekend’s race so we’re really just trying to get those place differential points out of him. Going into Sunday, we have the #21 Ford ranked in the mid-teens, which means we should get a decent amount of points for the money if everything goes to plan. Blaney ran 10th at Phoenix earlier this year, but he also started 10th in that race. Still, the #21 Ford showed some speed here at Richmond on Saturday, posting the 13th-fastest lap in Happy Hour with the 10th-best ten-lap average. This is going to be Ryan’s first Sprint Cup start here at Richmond International Raceway but we all know by now that the sky is the limit for this kid.

DraftKings NASCAR Drivers to Avoid for Richmond

Richmond International Raceway is a 0.75-mile track that is technically considered a short track, but with the way it is laid out and the speeds we reach here, it races like a speedway. In our opinion, some of the best Sprint Cup action we will see all year will be right here at Richmond. Qualifying was rained out on Friday, so the field was set by the first practice speeds. That means that the drivers that were fast off the truck are going to be starting up front. There aren’t many DraftKings drivers that you should avoid like the plague this weekend, but there are some, so make sure the following guys aren’t on your rosters.

Kasey Kahne ($8,200) – Kasey Kahne should have a permanent spot on these weekly lists. You see, Kasey Kahne always has been–and probably always will be–a disappointing Fantasy NASCAR option. And this year especially, he’s been blowing smoke up people’s asses on a more regular basis. What I mean by that is that he looks really good during practice and qualifying and then ends up laying an egg on race day. Let’s just look at the fact that in the seven races since the Daytona 500, Kahne has finished worse than he started in four of them. He also has just two top 10s on the year with four finishes in the mid-20s. This weekend at Richmond, it was the same old story with Kasey Kahne: he will start Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400 from 8th, and he posted the 2nd-fastest lap during Saturday’s Happy Hour practice. Kahne did finish 6th in this race last season but that’s his only result better than 12th in the last seven races here. He’s not worth the gamble this weekend.

Clint Bowyer ($7,200) – Clint Bowyer had a huge DraftKings week at Bristol last Sunday, so congratulations on those who took the gamble there. But let’s not get all excited and think that Clint Bowyer is “back” or anything. Remember, Matt DiBenedetto finished 6th at Bristol, so to mark that race off as a fluke–or whatever other term you can think of–is alright with us. This week, Clint Bowyer is “back” to his normal self and will probably struggle to crack the top 30 during the race. He starts 39th, which is attractive for those looking at place differential points, but he was 37th-fastest in Happy Hour and is severely overpriced this week at $7,200. The reason his price is so high is because Bower has six top 10s in the last eight Richmond races, but trust us, he has virtually no chance of finishing that high this weekend.

hamlin-burnout-sprint-unlimitedDenny Hamlin ($10,400) – We’re going to file this under “overpriced.” Quite simply, it’s not worth taking the $10,400 hit and putting Denny Hamlin on your DraftKings team this weekend. He’s the 3rd-highest-priced driver in this game for Richmond but he’s probably not even going to be in the top 10 in terms of points scored. Yeah, Denny is a two-time winner at this track and owns an impressive 10.8 career average finish here, but he has finished 18th or worse in five of his last six starts here, and you can’t really chalk that up to bad luck. Also, this #11 team has been anything but a solid Fantasy NASCAR pick since winning at Daytona; in the last seven Sprint Cup races, Hamlin has two good finishes (3rd at Phoenix and Fontana) but other than that hasn’t been much of a factor and hasn’t posted a result better than 12th. Hamlin will start 5th for this Sunday’s Toyota Owners 400, so really the only way you could justify him as a DraftKings pick is if he was going to lead a bunch of laps, and we just don’t see that happening.

Austin Dillon ($7,800) – After starting off the 2016 season red hot, this #3 team has made an abrupt landing back down on Earth. With his 26th-place finish a Bristol last weekend, Austin Dillon has now ended up 19th or worse in three of the last four Sprint Cup races, and if history is going to repeat itself, then he’s going to make it four of the last five here at Richmond on Sunday. In four career starts here at RIR, Austin Dillon has finished 27th three times–hey, at least he’s consistent–while posting a 20th-place result here in 2014. This weekend, he starts 11th, so he’s probably going to lose points on place differential, and the #3 Chevrolet ranked 24th-fastest during Happy Hour on Saturday (and just 19th on the ten-lap average chart). If Austin started mid-pack for this year’s Toyota Owners 400 he might be an option in DraftKings, but since he doesn’t, you won’t find him on any of our rosters.
