Now that we’ve had two weeks of great on-track action at Daytona and Atlanta, we’re probably due for a mediocre race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday–at least from a fan perspective. I hope not, but the first two races are going to be pretty hard to top. As far as fantasy points, we got the bounce back we neededwith the 339 points scored in Yahoo! at Atlanta after the struggle in week one.

With the Kobalt 400 on Sunday, it should be a relatively predictable event. Teams will be focusing more on speed than comfort this weekend–the exact opposite of last–as Las Vegas is a much smoother track than Atlanta. It is another 1.5-mile venue, however. With that being said, LVMS is a tri-oval compared to Atlanta’s quad-oval shape. We typically see familiar faces up front in Sin City, but we’ll also take into account how teams performed last week due to the new low downforce package.

Yahoo! A Group Picks for Las Vegas

Matt Kenseth (9 starts remaining) – Well, I can guarantee this: if Matt Kenseth gets black flagged on Sunday, he will know about it immediately. Jason Ratcliff made a major mistake last weekend by not telling Kenseth he was black flagged, and it might have cost the #20 team the race. Matt arguably had the best car up until that point, and in case you don’t believe that, look at the fact that he had the 6th-best driver rating at Atlanta despite finishing two laps down in 19th. So, I’m going to go with Kenseth this week in a bounce back performance at Las Vegas. He’s a three-time winner here and has finished 11th or better in five of the last six races at this track. Additionally, he has led the most laps here of all drivers with 516 total. Kenseth excels at race tracks where he can get in a groove, and that has Las Vegas written all over it.

Sylvania 300 - PracticeDale Earnhardt, Jr. (8 starts remaining) – Junior didn’t have the 2nd-best car at Atlanta last weekend but he had a top 5 car for sure. Now we’re going to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a track that the #88 Chevrolet has ran the best of all Sprint Cup cars over the last two years. We might burn another Junior start here early in the season but I’m okay with that. In last year’s Las Vegas race, Earnhardt started 4th and finished there as well, and in 2014 he ran 2nd to Brad Keselowski. Additionally, Junior hasn’t ended up worse than 16th at this track since the 2006 season, and he’s posted a top 10 in seven of the last eight here. You could make a case for a few other drivers over Junior this week, but I’m still in safe mode. And if the #88 Chevrolet has as much speed as it did at Atlanta, Junior just might win the Kobalt 400 on Sunday.

For the record, Kevin Harvick is probably going to be the favorite this weekend, and I can’t argue with putting him on your roster for Las Vegas. He did win this race last year after all. With that being said, I’ve already used one Harvick start, and we have Phoenix coming up after Las Vegas, where the #4 Chevrolet is a virtual lock.

Yahoo! B Group Picks for Las Vegas

carl-edwards-loudon-2015Carl Edwards (8 starts remaining) – Well how about that, a solid top 5 finish out of Carl Edwards at Atlanta. This new low downforce package is going to help him a lot, and that means Carl should be even better at tracks that he’s run well at over the last few years… a.k.a. Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Last year, Carl finished 42nd in this race but let’s not forget that he was running near the top 5 when he had contact with Kasey Kahne that ruined his day. In the four previous races at Las Vegas, Edwards never finished worse than 5th, and that streak started with a win back in 2011.

Martin Truex, Jr. (8 starts remaining) – Different year, same heartbreak for Martin Truex, Jr. The good news for fantasy owners is that the #78 Chevrolet was one of the best cars at Atlanta, and I could make the case that Truex is better this year than he was last year. That means he should win at least one race in 2016. Looking at his history at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Truex posted a career-best 2nd-place finish in last year’s event, and he has three top 10s in his last five starts here. I know we might use another Truex start here on Sunday, but I’m not in the business of giving up top 5 finishes with the B Group drivers.

Paul Menard (9 starts remaining) – Some drivers just really like a certain track and always finish well there, and that’s exactly how it is with Paul Menard at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Over the last five Sprint Cup seasons, Menard has never finished worse than 12th here in Sin City, and that includes a career-best 3rd-place finish here in 2014. I’m not overly impressed with how this #27 team is running thus far in 2016, but what’s a Las Vegas race without taking a little bit of a risk?

ryan-newman-crew-chief-atlantaRyan Newman (9 starts remaining) – Yeah, “The Rocketman” burned a lot of fantasy racers last week at Atlanta, but let’s not dismiss the fact that he was running very well up until the wreck. And despite finishing 24th, Newman still had the 12th-best driver rating. Looking at his recent history here at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Ryan has ended up 7th or better in four of the last five races and ran 3rd in this race a year ago while leading 14 laps. It’s important to have a short memory with Fantasy NASCAR, so if Newman burned you in Atlanta, don’t hold it against him in Las Vegas.

If you’re looking for to save the starts of a guy like Truex or Edwards, why not give Austin Dillon a shot? He ran 11th at Atlanta last weekend after posting a top 10 finish at Daytona. I’ve seen over the years that some “mid-tier” drivers simply get off to a hot start and then fizzle out, so it’s best you use them while they’re running well.

Yahoo! C Group Picks for Las Vegas

I’m kicking myself for not taking Chase Elliott (9 starts remaining) at Atlanta last weekend. Those top 10 runs out of C Group drivers are exactly what you need to finish among the best in this game. There’s no use crying over spilt milk, though, you can only hope to not make the same mistake twice. Now the question becomes who to pair Elliott with on your roster for Las Vegas. Brian Vickers (9 starts remaining) will be in the #14 Chevrolet this week and has finished 15th or better in four of his last five starts at this track, two of which were also top 10s. I’m not expecting that on Sunday but it’s possible. Ryan Blaney ended up 19th here at Las Vegas one year ago, but with that being said, I’m going to use alternatives while I can, so my C Group drivers will be Chase Elliott and Brian Vickers for Las Vegas.

Race Recap: Johnson Wins Atlanta, Ties Earnhardt

It was “all we could ask for.”

That’s what Kyle Busch said about NASCAR’s new aero package, which made it’s debut on Sunday at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Busch, who had to start at the rear of the field due to his qualifying time being disallowed, had plenty of reasons to be happy–and one in particular: he finished 3rd.

But he was right, it was all we could ask for. After the photo finish at Daytona one week ago, that makes us 2-for-2 with the new NASCAR season with great late-race action. The racing at Atlanta on Sunday, however, was top notch all day.

It was apparent within the first 20 laps that tires were going to be everything. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. passed 11 cars in the first 10 laps but ended up slipping back just as fast later on in the run because he used up his tires too early. As expected, there were many comers and goers as the day went on, but the few legitimate contenders stood tall.

A Racer’s Race

The QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500 was, to put it simply, a racer’s race. In order to be successful on Sunday, you needed your driver to take of his tires over a long green flag run–which we saw plenty of–while flawlessly executing your pit strategy and not making any mistakes.

One team rose to the occasion.

With 49 laps to go, Jimmie Johnson was ordered to pit road by crew chief Chad Knaus, who decided to throw his hail mary for the race. At that time, the #48 Chevrolet was running 3rd behind Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex, Jr., and this move was the only real shot that Jimmie had to win. And boy did it pay off.

With under ten laps to go, the #48 Chevrolet was cruising to victory with a 6-second lead when a late-race caution came out thanks to Ryan Newman wrecking in turn one. All lead lap cars pitted for four tires and fuel with Johnson getting out first and selecting the bottom lane to restart from. It was all over from there.

Atlanta is notorious for being tough on the high side when it comes to restarts, and when Kevin Harvick spun his tires, the fat lady cleared her throat. An eventual wreck caused the caution and gave Johnson the win, while his teammate, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., barely beat 3rd-place Kyle Busch to the line.

This was Johnson’s 76th career Sprint Cup victory, which ties him with the late, great Dale Earnhardt for 7th all time.

Harvick, Truex End Up Disappointed

Harvick putting ear radio piece inFor the fourth time in the last five years, Kevin Harvick led at least 100 laps at Atlanta, only to fall short in the closing laps. It was apparent all day on Sunday that the #4 Chevrolet was the best car on the long runs, and it was his race to lose until Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus gambled on that pit stop with almost 50 laps to go. When you pair that with the fact that the #4 team had a slow pit stop when they did come in for service soon after, it’s not all that surprising that it was someone other than Harvick in victory lane.

What was surprising, however, was the fact that both Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex, Jr. finished outside of the top 5. The #4 and #78 cars were the best in the field for most of the QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500, and as mentioned before, the last restart really put the nail in the coffin for these two drivers. Both were lined up on the outside on that last restart, and when Harvick spun his tires, Truex tried to push him instead of taking the risky option and making it 3-wide. When it was all said and done, they finished 6th and 7th.

Still, it was an impressive day for both Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex, Jr., especially the latter, who doesn’t seem to have missed a beat since moving over to Toyota from Chevrolet after the 2015 season. Truex narrowly missed winning the Daytona 500 one week ago, and was in position to win this week in Atlanta as well. He even led 34 laps on Sunday. No matter how you look at it, the #78 team looks to be a legitimate contender all around in the Sprint Cup Series once again in 2016.

Other Notables

  • The Penske Racing Fords of Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano under-performed on Sunday, which was somewhat expected. However, there were times during the race that both cars had legitimate top 5 speed. This is a situation to pay close attention to next week at Las Vegas, another intermediate track, as many people believe that Penske may be a little slow out of the gate with this low downforce package.
  • Rookie Chase Elliott had a strong top 10 run at Atlanta, and another Chevy driver surprisingly did as well: Austin Dillon came home 11th in the QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500, and stayed on the lead lap for much of the racing afternoon. After a very disappointing 2015 campaign, Dillon has started out the 2016 year with a 9th-place finish at Daytona and now a career-best 11th at Atlanta.
  • Roush-Fenway Racing, an organization looking to bounce back from a disastrous 2015 season, got off to a nice start here at Atlanta with Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. coming home 10th. His teammate, Greg Biffle, wound up 13th. Stenhouse had three top 10 finishes during his entire 2015 campaign.

Atlanta Race Day NASCAR Betting Picks

Now that practice and qualifying are finished, we have a clearer picture of which drivers are going to be contenders (and pretenders) in today’s QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500. For a full top 25 rundown, I invite you to check out my Post Practice Predictions article over at ifantasyrace.

Kevin Harvick remains the race day favorite for this week’s event at Atlanta Motor Speedway at +475, followed by Denny Hamlin at +575 and Joey Logano at +650.

Race Day Betting Picks for Atlanta

The driver odds in this post are accurate as of 9:30 am ET on February 28, 2016 and came from Bovada.

BET OF THE DAY: Jimmie Johnson (+725) – The early betting lines had Johnson as the 3rd-most favored driver in the field at +650. After practice and qualifying, he is now the 5th-most favored driver at +725 with the three above ahead of him as well as Kyle Busch at +700. The thing is, Joey Logano has looked like garbage all weekend and Kyle Busch has to start at the rear of the field. Thus, there’s some great value in putting some money on JJ. The #48 Chevrolet was one of the best cars in Happy Hour on Saturday and Johnson leads all active drivers with four wins at Atlanta. Yeah, he qualified mid-pack in 19th, but let’s not forget that he won this race after starting 37th last year. Jimmie is my pick to win today and I nearly jumped for joy when I saw I could get him at +725.

Sylvania 300 - PracticeDale Earnhardt, Jr. (+1800) – I noticed that many people from the Sprint Cup garage (crew chiefs, team members, etc.) were talking about the #88 Chevrolet when asked which cars are the strongest for today’s QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500. And I don’t disagree. It’s pretty rare that the Junior shows a ton of speed in Happy Hour, but he did just that on Saturday, ending up 6th on the ten-lap average chart with the 4th-best overall lap. I thought I was happy locking Kurt Busch in at +1600 earlier this week. I’m even happier taking Earnhardt, Jr. at +1800 on race day! From an average finish perspective, Atlanta is the best track on the circuit for him, and he finished 3rd in this race a year ago.

STAY AWAY: Joey Logano (+650) – Joey Logano isn’t going to win this race, yet he’s 3rd on the odds list. Both Penske Fords have struggled with their cars over the race weekend, and if Happy Hour on Saturday was any indication, the #22 team might struggle to even crack the top 10 today. Yeah, Logano looked that bad. I wouldn’t have predicted that in any race this season but for whatever reason the Penske boys just haven’t quite figured out NASCAR’s new package yet. The #22 team is going to have to take a major swing at adjustments before the race goes green today if they want a respectable finish, but it’s going to take a lot to get this car into the top 5 with a shot to win, and I just don’t see it happening.

Final Atlanta Yahoo! Fantasy NASCAR Rankings

Now that practice and qualifying is completed, it’s time to lock down our final rosters in Yahoo! Auto Racing. Earlier this week I posted my initial thoughts on which drivers would be the best strategic choices for this weekend’s QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500. I stuck to my guns with what I said earlier in the week and did not deviate from any of the picks I had. In the C Group, I did decide to go with Brian Scott and Ty Dillon.

Below is my final rankings for each driver grouping in the Yahoo! Auto Racing game for Atlanta. This is based on how each driver qualified as well as how their car looked during the practice sessions. If you’re looking for practice results and detailed notes, be sure to head on over to ifantasyrace.com for those. There’s even a ten-lap average cheat sheet!

Yahoo! A Group Final Rankings for Atlanta

I selected Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano in the A Group this weekend, and this choice is a no-brainer. While the former is a potential race winner on Sunday, the latter may have trouble finishing inside the top 10. Kevin Harvick starts near the front and may lead the most laps in the QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500 before going to victory lane. The Choice: Kevin Harvick

Final A Group Rankings: (1) Jimmie Johnson, (2) Kevin Harvick, (3) Matt Kenseth, (4) Kurt Busch, (5) Dale Earnhardt, Jr., (6) Denny Hamlin, (7) Kyle Busch, (8) Joey Logano, (9) Brad Keselowski

Yahoo! B Group Final Rankings for Atlanta

The four choices available for the Fantasy Racing Online Yahoo! team are Carl Edwards, Martin Truex, Jr., Ryan Newman, and Kyle Larson. You could make a case for starting three of the four drivers this weekend. After Happy Hour, where the #42 Chevrolet was mediocre at best, I’m staying away from Larson is most fantasy leagues. It’s just notTruex Chase sticker after win at Pocono worth the risk this early in the year. Now, I do believe that Newman has top 10 potential this week, which would allow us to save either an Edwards start or a Truex start. Or we can go for max points and leave Newman on the bench, starting the #19 and #78 Toyotas. My initial gut reaction is to go with the heavy hitters, so that’s what I’m doing. The Choices: Carl Edwards and Martin Truex, Jr.

Final B Group Rankings: (1) Martin Truex, Jr., (2) Carl Edwards, (3) Ryan Newman, (4) Jamie McMurray, (5) Kasey Kahne, (6) Austin Dillon, (7) Greg Biffle, (8) Paul Menard, (9) Kyle Larson, (10) Trevor Bayne, (11) Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., (12) Aric Almirola, (13) A.J. Allmendinger, (14) Danica Patrick, (15) Casey Mears, (16) Clint Bowyer

Yahoo! C Group Final Rankings for Atlanta

I went with the start saving option this weekend, and I’m glad I did. That means I have Brian Scott and Ty Dillon on my Yahoo! roster this week. My strategy here is to keep the good C drivers like Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney available for the end of the season, where they should be at their best. Looking at this weekend, Brian Scott surprised most people and qualified 10th, while Ty Dillon qualified 18th in the #14 Chevrolet. Blaney and Elliott will start together in Row 12. I really like Brian Scott as a sleeper this week but I have to go with my other option. The Choice: Ty Dillon

Final C Group Rankings: (1) Chase Elliott, (2) Ryan Blaney, (3) Ty Dillon, (4) Brian Scott, (5) Landon Cassill, (6) Regan Smith, (7) Chris Buescher, (8) the rest

Atlanta NASCAR Fantasy Live Picks

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. with helmet

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. with helmetBy Jordan McAbee

With some moderate success in NASCAR Fantasy Live last weekend at Daytona, it’s time to set our sights on the QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500 this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. If you had the exact same roster as me for Daytona, we’re sitting with 197.5 total points after race #1, in the 97.4 percentile. Not too bad; it’s always nice to get off to a good start with your fantasy racing team.

For Sunday’s Atlanta race, there are a lot of options. While the best roster going into last Sunday was pretty clear cut, it’s hard to say how this race will unfold. There’s also quite a few good cars starting mid-pack or worse in the QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500. We’re set to run 325 laps once the race goes green this weekend, and that means we’ll have just over 160 bonus points up for grabs for laps led as well as fastest laps.

NASCAR.com Fantasy Live Picks for Atlanta

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. ($26.75) – I had a really hard time dropping Denny Hamlin for Dale Earnhardt, Jr., but I did it. The reason was because I had Hamlin locked in at $26.00 from last week, and he went up a quarter in price. Yeah, it’s only a quarter, but quarters can be very valuable in this Fantasy NASCAR game. However, I have my reasons for taking Junior this week. One, he’s pretty good at Atlanta, with no finish worse than 11th in the last four events here. The #88 Chevrolet was also one of the fastest cars in Happy Hour on Saturday, posting the 6th-best ten-lap average and the 4th-best overall lap. Also, we’re going to Las Vegas next week, a track that Junior has been exceptional at lately. You never know if his price may increase this week or not. I have the #88 Chevrolet as a top 5 car heading into Sunday’s QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500, and if that works out, we should get a good amount of points from Earnhardt considering he starts 16th. I’d love to see a repeat of 2015, though, where the #88 came home 3rd. It’s possible.

jimmie-johnson-racing-texasJimmie Johnson ($26.50) – He may have scored the 9th-most points last week in NASCAR.com Fantasy Live, but I’m expecting an even bigger week out of Jimmie Johnson here at Atlanta on Sunday. First, he starts 19th, so there’s the opportunity for a lot of place differential points. Also, I personally thought that the #48 Chevrolet was the car to beat on Saturday, so if Jimmie can get out front, there’s lap led points coming our way as well. Finally, as of now I have Johnson as the favorite to win the QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500, so obviously we want that driver on our team. JJ is one of the best value picks you can grab in NASCAR.com Fantasy Live this week, especially considering he’s a 4-time winner here at Atlanta Motor Speedway and he has four top 5s in the last six races here–including a win from the 37th starting spot one year ago.

Kyle Busch ($27.50) – Typically I stay away from the highest priced drivers in this game, but the fact that Kyle Busch is starting from the rear of the field means that he’s simply too good to pass up. Not only are there a ton of place differential points possible with Rowdy on Sunday, but I also have him as a possible top 5 threat in the race. Kyle Busch could very well be the highest-scoring driver in the NASCAR.com Fantasy Live game on Sunday. The #18 Toyota has some nice speed for the QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500 (I mean, Kyle did technically win the pole) and Rowdy has ended up 6th or better in three of his last five starts at this track. Don’t forget that Busch did miss this race a year ago because of his injury, but Kyle went to victory lane here at Atlanta in the 2013 race.

danica-patrick-go-daddyDanica Patrick ($11.75) – …I can’t believe I’m doing this. Well, in order to be able to afford the drivers above, you have to make some sacrifices. This is a race where I’m willing to take a risk (huge risk) with Danica because she actually hasn’t been too bad at Atlanta Motor Speedway; last year she came home 16th after starting 18th, and she finished 6th in the 2014 race despite starting back in 27th. I’m pretty sure that that 6th-place finish was legitimate, too, meaning she just had a great race. If Danica can stay on the lead lap in the QuikTrip Folds of Honor 500 on Sunday, she’s capable of pulling off a top 20 again. She starts 25th, so if she does slap the wall, the damage won’t be too terrible in terms of fantasy points.

Landon Cassill ($7.50) – I mentioned last week that I wanted to fit Landon Cassill in my roster for Daytona but just couldn’t make it work. He was $7.00 last week and already jumped up to $7.50 this week. I honestly think this is one driver that could see a huge price increase as the season wears on, so it’d be best to lock him in at $7.50 while we can. Cassill is your typical low-dollar driver that you need to fill a roster with NASCAR.com Fantasy Live. However, there’s a lot of potential with him and this #38 team. For a great article on how much of a bargain Cassill could end up being this year, check out Zach Joyce’s post over at ifantasyrace. He will start 29th for Sunday’s race at Atlanta.
