Fantasy NASCAR Sleeper Picks: Dover

Martin Truex, Jr. standing in the garage

Martin Truex, Jr. standing in the garage“The Monster Mile” is the site of this week’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, the FedEx 400 Benefiting Autism Speaks. Although it is not considered a short track, Dover International Speedway it is in a way, as it is a one-mile race track with pretty high speeds. We should see some great racing on Sunday afternoon, although keep in mind that this tends to be a pretty straightforward race–expect to see similar faces up front. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some sleepers to keep an eye on, though…

Fantasy Sleepers for Dover

Martin Truex, Jr. – Okay, if last week at Charlotte proved anything, it was that this #78 team is the real deal. Truex probably should have been the champion of this year’s Coca-Cola 600, but bad luck once again bit him at the worst possible time. He still ended up with a 5th-place finish at Charlotte, though, which is his eleventh top 10 in the twelve Sprint Cup races ran in 2015. For reference, Truex had five of those results all of last year. Looking at Dover, this is Martin’s home track and the site of his first career victory in NASCAR’s top series (that came back in 2007). He’s finished 7th or better in four of the last six races here at “The Monster Mile” and there will be plenty of eyes on this #78 Chevrolet on Sunday; after almost winning at Charlotte, Truex is probably one of the favorites heading into the FedEx 400 this weekend. In The Showcase, Martin will net 4 handicap points for fantasy owners this weekend, which is pretty good value for how he’s been running this year. If you think Truex can come home with a top 5 finish (or better) on Sunday, there’s no reason not to consider putting him on your rosters.

Ryan Newman looking at carRyan Newman – Okay, you might be wondering how Ryan Newman got onto this “sleeper” list, but my definition of a sleeper includes drivers that don’t run very well at a track but could get a top 10 finish or better. Ryan Newman fits the criteria. “The Rocketman” has finished 8th in each of the last two fall races here at “The Monster Mile” but those are his only finishes better than 15th at this track since the start of the 2011 season–eight races in total. He’s a three-time winner at Dover but that magic is gone from Newman ever since he left Penske way back in 2009. In fact, he has yet to post a top 5 finish here at Dover since, which has been twelve races in total. He finished inside the top 5 in six of his fourteen starts here with Penske. Newman has been the definition of consistent thus far in 2015, posting a result of 12th or better in all but two of the first twelve races this year. It’s nice to roll with consistency in fantasy racing from time to time. Newman will receive 6 handicap points in The Showcase this weekend, which is a very good value for fantasy owners considering an 11th-place finish will net you top 5 points. Keep an eye on that #31 Chevrolet this weekend.

Paul Menard – This guy just keeps rattling off top 15 after top 15. Those results probably aren’t going to win you any fantasy championships, but picking Menard at the right time–meaning when he ends up with a top 5–will help you get ahead of your competition. Am I saying that Paul is going to run top 5 here at Dover on Sunday? No, but a top 10 isn’t out of the question. Menard has been pretty solid at this track over the years and hasn’t ended up worse than 22nd at Dover since the 2011 season. He finished 10th in this event one year ago and with the way this #27 team is running lately, I don’t think it’s out of this world to think he can do it again. Menard finished 11th at Bristol earlier this year and has ended up 15th or better in four of the last five Sprint Cup events. The exception? His 18th-place run at Kansas. In The Showcase, Paul will net fantasy owners 7 handicap points on Sunday, which gives you a little cushion if you plan on putting him on your roster. If he can manage to qualify up front, I’d give Menard even more consideration this weekend.

Fantasy NASCAR Sleeper Picks: Charlotte

Jamie McMurray racing

Jamie McMurray racingThe longest race of the season–the Coke 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway–is this Sunday night and once the checkered flag waves, the 2015 NASCAR season will officially be 1/3rd complete. Hard to believe, huh? This also marks the end of Segment 2 in “The Showcase” here at Fantasy Racing Online. The Coca-Cola 600 is one of those races that typically allows for fantasy owners to take some risks and go with a sleeper pick or two. For whatever reason, the top drivers don’t finish up front here on a consistent basis.

Fantasy Sleepers for Charlotte

Jamie McMurray – Words can’t describe how much I like Jamie McMurray as a sleeper pick this weekend. In most leagues, Jamie Mac is a mid-tier driver that still qualifies as a sleeper. Here at Fantasy Racing Online, he’s actually one of the favorites in The Showcase (we’ll get to that later). For all intents and purposes, however, McMurray is a sleeper this week. Jamie had a very solid couple of races here at Charlotte Motor Speedway last season, leading 39 laps total and finishing 5th and 3rd in the two points-paying races. Let’s not forget that he won last year’s All Star Race as well. Momentum-wise, only one driver has a better average finish over the last six Sprint Cup races, and that’s Jimmie Johnson. Yes, Jamie McMurray (9.7) has ended up better, on average, than Kevin Harvick (10.0) over the last month and a half. In The Showcase, Jamie McMurray will receive just 3 handicap points for this week’s race. This is because the driver of the #1 Chevrolet has some of the most consistent finishes over the last six races both overall in the Sprint Cup Series as well as here at Charlotte. Unless you think he’s going to lead the most laps and possibly win on Sunday night, I’d probably shy away from McMurray in The Showcase because of the low handicap points.

Chase Elliott NNSChase Elliott – After a disastrous first Sprint Cup start at Martinsville earlier this year, Chase Elliott rebounded nicely at Richmond with a solid 16th-place finish. We all know he has the talent to compete with the Sprint Cup drivers, and he has Hendrick power under the hood, so now it’s just going to take some luck and execution on the part of the #25 team as a whole–not something entirely out of this world. Now, the Coca-Cola 600 is the longest race in NASCAR, so that makes me leery when it comes to picking someone like Chase. However, the 15 handicap points that he’s going to receive in The Showcase, it really makes you consider whether it’s worth the risk to take a chance on him. The 2014 Xfinity Series champion sat on the pole here at Charlotte in the fall Xfinity race and led 66 laps en route to an 8th-place finish.

Austin Dillon – The driver of the #3 Chevrolet has just one top 10 finish thus far in the 2015 Sprint Cup season, but with a little (okay, maybe a lot) of luck on Sunday night, he might be able to add to that total. Austin Dillon has raced four times here at Charlotte and has been pretty good, finishing 8th and 6th in his two Showdown races. In the races that actually count, Austin finished 16th and 13th in the two points-paying races last season, which is pretty good when you consider he started 32nd and 20th in those two races. The only problem I have with him is that he has no momentum, so it’s incredibly difficult to trust Austin right now. In The Showcase, Dillon will net 9 handicap points for the Coca-Cola 600, which is a pretty good value for a sleeper pick. So, if Austin can manage to finish 12th or so, he’ll net you top 5 points. Not too bad if you ask me, but he’s going to have to look real sporty in practice for me to seriously consider the #3 this weekend.

Fantasy NASCAR Sleeper Picks: Richmond

Danica Patrick in garage fantasy NASCAR

Danica Patrick in garage fantasy NASCARWell, after last weekend’s wreck-fest at Bristol Motor Speedway, it’s safe to say that, in most leagues, I’m off to the worst start in my fantasy NASCAR career. I guess there’s only one way to go now: up. And it all starts this weekend at Richmond International Raceway. This is another short track race for the Sprint Cup drivers but we shouldn’t see nearly as many wrecks as last week because Richmond drives more like an intermediate track. Once again having a good handling race car will be as important (if not more) than having a lot of horsepower under the hood.

Fantasy Sleepers for Richmond

Danica Patrick – I can’t believe I’m saying this…Danica Patrick has impressed me thus far in 2015. I absolutely cannot stand the hype surrounding the only female racer in NASCAR’s top series but you have to give her credit: Danica currently sits 13th in the points standings and ahead of drivers such as Paul Menard, Carl Edwards, and her owner, Tony Stewart. We’re eight races into the 2015 season now so it’s not like she’s just had a fluke run or two, either. With her 9th-place finish at Bristol last week, Danica now has three straight finishes of 16th or better and that includes her season-best result of 7th at Martinsville a month ago. Yes, you read the right: in two of the (arguably) toughest races of the season thus far, Patrick has ended up 7th and 9th. Here at Richmond, she has amassed an average finish of just 27.3 over four career starts but Danica ended up 16th here last fall. She knows how to stay on the lead lap in most races and that allows the driver of the #10 Chevrolet to crank out top 20s and sometimes top 15s with ease. In The Showcase, Danica will receive 11 handicap points for Richmond, which is a great value if you’re willing to take the risk and put the #10 on your roster. We typically don’t see many people selecting Danica Patrick, though, and I’m guessing that won’t change on Saturday night, either.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr wreck at Martinsville 2015Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. – Another driver that had a great night at Bristol last Sunday was Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. Like I said, horsepower isn’t as important at places like Bristol (and this week at Richmond) so organizations like Roush-Fenway Racing have less of a disadvantage on race day. Here at Richmond, Ricky started off strong during his rookie campaign, posting finishes of 16th and 10th in his first two Cup starts at this track. He followed that up with a 38th-place finish in the 2014 running of this event and was 26th here last fall. The good news? He started 7th in the latter event, so it’s not like he was bad all weekend. In addition to his 4th-place finish last week, Stenhouse now has four finishes of 15th or better over the last five Sprint Cup races. In many leagues, that’s some excellent value for a guy in Stenhouse’s tier in the fantasy world. In The Showcase, the driver of the #17 Ford will receive 10 handicap points for the Toyota Owners 400, which makes Ricky a solid sleeper pick if you think he can pull off another top 10 finish on Saturday night.

Aric Almirola – Here’s an across-the-board sleeper pick that everyone can get behind this weekend. Looking at the 2015 season as a whole thus far, the driver of the #43 Ford has been very, very good. And he’s not getting the recognition for it, which is one exact definition of a sleeper. We’re eight races into 2015 and Almirola has just one finish worse than 19th–a 26th-place effort at Las Vegas. He wound up 13th at Bristol last Sunday night which makes it three races in the last four that he has finished between 11th and 13th. Here at Richmond, Aric finished 10th last September and that’s his second top 10 in his last four starts at this track. His worst finish over that four-race span is 20th, by the way. In The Showcase, Almirola gets 8 handicap points on Saturday night, which is pretty good value for the top 10 potential that the #43 Ford has. If Aric can qualify up front for this year’s Toyota Owners 400, fantasy owners should definitely keep him in the back of their mind.

Fantasy NASCAR Favorites: Bristol

Matt Kenseth is smiling about this week's race at Bristol. You should, too.

Matt Kenseth is smiling about this week's race at Bristol. You should, too. This weekend we have the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, which should provide us with some excellent short track racing entertainment on Sunday afternoon. However, as we all know, races at tracks like Bristol can be very difficult and frustrating for fantasy racers. Track position will be very important on Sunday and a mistake on pit road could easily ruin a driver’s day. Those who have a car that drive well will make their way to the front, and then  it will be a mad dash to the checkered flag. This should be fun…good luck!

Fantasy Favorites for Bristol

Matt Kenseth – At short tracks, handling and comfort become much more important than horsepower, which definitely plays into the hands of the drivers at Joe Gibbs Racing. We saw it back at Martinsville with Denny Hamlin taking home the checkered flag, and it could surprise me whatsoever if either him, Matt Kenseth, or Carl Edwards went to victory lane this Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway. My money is on Kenseth. No racer has a better average driver rating over the last two years at this track than Kenseth (117.7) and he has led a series-high 461 laps over that span. Finish-wise, Matt hasn’t finished inside the top 10 in the last two spring races–he probably had top 5 cars, though–but he won the 2013 fall race at “The Bullring” and came home 3rd in that event last August. In The Showcase, Kenseth will receive 3 handicap points for Sunday’s race, which is a decent value for a guy of this caliber. Matt has had disappointing finishes in three of the last four Sprint Cup races but this team is capable of breaking out with a win on any weekend, and it’s going to happen soon.

Joey Logano fast pit stop at TexasJoey Logano – I consider Joey Logano one of the best intermediate track drivers in the Sprint Cup series but he has majorly improved his short track racing over the last couple of years and probably doesn’t get enough recognition for that. Joey is the most recent winner here at Bristol Motor Speedway although it’s worth noting that he has never finished inside the top 10 in the spring race. With that being said, in the last three fall Bristol races, Logano has ended up 1st, 5th, and 8th. In The Showcase, “Sliced Bread” is the top rated driver and will recieve 0 handicap points. This shouldn’t be that surprising considering he has had good finishes here at Bristol as of late and has yet to finish worse than 10th in Sprint Cup action in 2015. Logano now has back-to-back top 5s at Martinsville and Texas and should be in the hunt for a third in a row on Sunday.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. – This #88 team has been feast or famine thus far in 2015 with the former happening more often than the latter. I really like what new crew chief Greg Ives and driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr. have going on right now and it’s only a matter of time before we see these guys in victory lane. Will it happen this weekend? It’s possible, but Junior’s only win here at Bristol came way back during the 2004 season. Still, Earnhardt has just two finishes worse than 16th at this track over the last 12 events, so you know the talent is there. If the #88 team can put a good setup in this car on Sunday, it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Junior win. This is one of his best (and favorite) tracks on the circuit. In The Showcase, NASCAR’s most popular driver will receive a very generous 7 handicap points because his average finishes over the last six races at Bristol as well as in the Sprint Cup series overall are being brought down by some terrible results. With this handicap value, Junior should be considered a must-pick on Sunday unless the #88 Chevrolet looks really bad–which I don’t see happening.

Fantasy NASCAR Sleeper Picks: Bristol

A.J. Allmendinger interview

A.J. Allmendinger interviewThe races at Bristol are events of attrition, and this can open up the door for sleeper picks to really thrive. Does that mean you should go all out and put all dark horse picks on your roster this weekend? Of course not. However, if one or two of the middle-tier drivers qualify up front and look good in practice, you should definitely consider them. “The Bullring” is just a half-mile race track so starting position means a lot–as does pit selection.

Fantasy Sleepers for Bristol

A.J. Allmendinger – After starting off the 2015 season with a couple of top 10s, A.J. Allmendinger and his #47 team have really fallen off the map. This situation offers a great opportunity for fantasy racers when they’re targeting a sleeper pick because the driver is flying well under the radar. On the flip side, this also means that not many people will be picking the sleeper, so if they wreck out or have a bad race, it’s going to hurt you majorly. Anyway, I really like the engine package that Allmendinger has this year and he has quite a bit of talent when it comes to attrition races like this. Here at Bristol, A.J. has never posted a top 10 finish over 13 career starts but he does have three finishes inside the top 15 over the last five events here. The other results have been 17th and 25th. Not too bad for a driver like Allmendinger if you ask me. In The Showcase, “The Dinger” will receive 8 handicap points for the first race in “Thunder Valley.” Although this is a decent value, you have to look at the other options and notice that guys like Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Denny Hamlin, and Carl Edwards are all getting a similar amount of points. A.J. might still be a nice sleeper pick in other leagues, though.

Jamie McMurray racingJamie McMurray – Don’t look now but Jamie McMurray has finished 11th or better in four of the last five Sprint Cup races this season. His year thus far looks pretty much the exact opposite of A.J. Allmendinger’s season. This #1 team started getting hot to end the 2014 Sprint Cup season and it looks like they’re starting to pick up right where they left off, which is a great sign for fantasy owners looking to find options other than the “top tier” drivers. At Bristol, Jamie Mac finished 8th in the fall race here last season and has ended up inside the top 10 in four of the last seven events ran at this track. You could do a lot worse than statistics like that. In The Showcase, Jamie will receive 7 handicap points this weekend at Bristol, which opens the door to put him on your roster if the #1 Chevrolet has the potential to end up around 8th or better on Sunday afternoon–which wouldn’t be totally out of this world. Remember, McMurray led 148 laps in the fall race here last season.

Paul Menard – Here’s the guy that could be a huge pick for many people across all fantasy leagues this weekend. The first half of the season is always the best time to pick Paul Menard, and although he’s had some bad finishes over the last two Sprint Cup races, the #27 Chevrolet has had speed–which is encouraging. Remember, in the four races from Atlanta to Fontana, Paul never finished worse than 14th in Sprint Cup action. And now for the really good stats: Menard has been one of the best drivers here at Bristol lately, amassing five top 10s over the last six races. His one hiccup was this race last season where he ended up 21st, but nobody is perfect. A lot of eyes (more than normal anyway) will be watching Paul Menard and the #27 Chevrolet this weekend. In The Showcase, Paul Menard will only receive 3 handicap points for Bristol, which should signify just how solid of a sleeper pick he is. In my personal opinion, Menard isn’t a very good pick this week at Fantasy Racing Online, but he should be on more rosters than normal throughout the rest of the fantasy racing world.
