It has been an awesome 2021 season, and now we’re down to the final race: the Season Finale 500 at Phoenix Raceway. This is a one-mile flat track and we raced here back in March with Martin Truex, Jr. going to victory lane after Joey Logano dominated the first half of the event.

NASCAR held one practice session on Friday (click here for speeds) and also used a qualifying session to set the starting lineup (click here for that), and we all pretty much know who should be the four fastest cars on Sunday: the Championship drivers. If you’ve been following along all season long, thank you and I hope you enjoyed, now let’s goooo (one more time)!!!!

Now that we’re officially done with the 550hp package, it’s time to go back and look at 750hp package data for the final two races of the season. The good news is we have a good data set to look at for the Martinsville race this weekend. We also have a good data set for the track type: short and flat. Martinsville is a half-mile “paperclip” that is extremely flat. Similar tracks include New Hampshire, Phoenix, and Richmond, but really Martinsville is quite unique from those other three. The most similar would be New Hampshire, in my opinion, but that was the rain race this season so make sure you take that data with a grain of salt.

DraftKings Strategy & Dominators for Phoenix 2

  • Obviously, things are a little special with this race since it’s the Championship event. I think you need at least two of the four Championship drivers in your lineup on Sunday, and possibly even three. Typically Phoenix is a two-dominator race, and that’s what I’m expecting will happen this weekend as well, although if Kyle Larson’s team figures out the long run speed, he could run away with it and make it a one-dominator race.
  • This is only a 312 lap race, which means we’ll have 78 FPTS for laps led on Sunday and probably around 108 FPTS for fastest laps.
  • Comparable tracks to look at would be Richmond (it is very similar to Phoenix) as well as New Hampshire, and then obviously the first Phoenix race in March. You can look back to the 2020 races on these tracks as well.
  • NASCAR is running the 750hp package this weekend. Other tracks where this package has been ran this season are: Phoenix, Martinsville (twice), Darlington (twice), Dover, Richmond (twice), Nashville, and New Hampshire.

Dominators

These are the potential dominators for this weekend’s race at Phoenix, and are listed in the order of likelihood according to my projections:

  • Kyle Larson
  • Chase Elliott
  • Denny Hamlin
  • Martin Truex, Jr.
  • Ryan Blaney
  • Joey Logano
  • William Byron

Some “surprise” dominators that could happen on Sunday include: Brad Keselowski, Christopher Bell, and Alex Bowman.

Optimal Lineup According to Jordan’s Projections

The optimal DraftKings lineup for Phoenix on Sunday according to my Projections is:

  • Kyle Larson
  • Chase Elliott
  • Martin Truex, Jr.
  • Chris Buescher
  • Chase Briscoe
  • Quin Houff

Confidence Rating = 6.9/10. Honestly it just depends how this race plays out on how effective this lineup is. I don’t hate it by any means, but I think you’re going to need Truex to dominate some for it to be optimal. Not quite sure if it can get there on his finishing position and place differential alone. As far as this potentially being punt week, I don’t particularly hate it, simply because of how this Championship race usually plays out with the four contenders.

GPP / Tournament Picks

Chase Elliott ($10,800) – With Chase Elliott starting 2nd next to his teammate, Kyle Larson ($11,500), I think that’s going to keep some DraftKings players from stacking both, which will lower Chase’s ownership a bit. However, even though the #9 Chevrolet hasn’t been the fastest this weekend, it was right there in practice on Friday (3rd-fastest 10-lap average and 2nd-fastest 15-lap average) as Elliott kind of went under the radar. He’s obviously the defending winner of this race and also led 93 laps in the first 2020 race at Phoenix as well. Chase came home 5th here in the March race this season.

Chase Briscoe ($6,200) – Briscoe may end up being a chalkier play than I think on Sunday afternoon, but as far as a NASCAR Fantasy pick, I like the upside here for the price. Briscoe qualified 22nd and is the highest starter of everyone in this price range, so that should deter other DFS players from picking him some. When you look at similar tracks this season, Chase finished 22nd in the first Phoenix race and then 22nd and 16th in the two Richmond races. Momentum-wise, Briscoe has finished 22nd or better in 11 straight races.

Quin Houff ($4,700) – I do think the door is open for Punt Week again simply because of how this race typically plays out with the Championship Four. I think you need at least two of those drivers in your lineup on Sunday, and maybe even three. As far as punts, it’s going to come down to your salary remaining, but Houff is probably the best option but Garrett Smithley ($4,600) is an option as well. I’m just concerned that Smithley only ran 10 laps in practice on Friday while Houff ran 25 laps. On the shorter, flat tracks excluding Martinsville, Houff has finished 23nd, 34th, 35th, and 35th.

Cash Core Drivers

Kyle Larson ($11,500) – I think in cash you have to roll with Kyle Larson on Sunday. He’s been the best car all season long and had a great car here at Phoenix in the spring, posting the 2nd-most fastest laps despite having to drive through the field multiple times. Larson is on the pole for Sunday’s Season Finale 500, and while his car really fell off during the practice session here on Friday, I’m actually not overly concerned about that because Chase Elliott’s car had good long run speed. Typically we see teammates have good speed across the board. We know that Larson has the best short run car by a wide margin this weekend, and if this team is able to dial in some long run speed in this Chevy, we could wee Larson lead this thing from start to finish…

Martin Truex, Jr. ($10,400) – Speaking of short run speed, Martin Truex, Jr. is lacking in that department this weekend. Big time. Because of that, he’s going to start from back in 12th for Sunday’s race, and when you pair that place differential potential with an under-pricing by DraftKings, Truex is definitely a cash play. This #19 team brought the same car that they won here with back in March and in practice, Truex was incredibly consistent on the long runs. We expect this race on Sunday to be full of long runs, so that should play into his hands. MTJ should be a solid top 5 car and could possibly even win this thing with a little bit of good fortune. He’s going to need it since he has the #JordanJinx.

Joey Logano ($8,900) – Another mis-price here by DraftKings. Joey Logano is one of the best drivers at Phoenix right now, and dominated the race here back in the spring. Additionally, he has finished top 3 in each of the last three races at this track, and has led 60 or more laps in each of the last four. On the similar tracks this season, Logano finished 3rd and 5th in the two Richmond races and 4th at New Hampshire, after ending up 2nd to Truex here at Phoenix earlier in the year. His 10th-place starting position with a little place differential potential is just the cherry on top.

Phoenix Finale NASCAR Algorithm Predicted Finishing Order

Burnout Chase Elliott Fantasy NASCAR

The final race of 2021 is on Sunday, and a Champion will be crowned as we have the Season Finale 500 from Phoenix Raceway. We did have practice and qualifying this weekend, with Brad Keselowski being the fastest on Friday in practice, and then Kyle Larson blowing everyone out of the water on speed during qualifying on Saturday. The algorithm this week is predicting pretty much what we’ve all come to expect with this race: the Champion will also be the race winner, and the four contending drivers are a notch above the field as well.

If you’d like to support the site you can do so by donating here.

How the algorithm works: There are quite a few statistics that go into the Power Index formula, including recent performance both overall and at this week’s track specifically, similar track performance, projected strength of the car, practice speeds (when applicable), starting position, and a few other variables.

Before We Get To The Algorithm Results…Thoughts On A Couple Drivers

Martin Truex, Jr. in Garage at Daytona

Martin Truex, Jr. – Coming into the weekend, Martin Truex, Jr. was the underdog for the Championship according to odds makers, and that hasn’t really changed. This #19 Toyota was the slowest of the Championship Four in practice on Friday and the same was true in qualifying on Saturday. You have to note, though, that Truex’s car didn’t seem to fall off as much as the other Playoff drivers over the long run, though. This #19 team brought the same car that they won with here in Phoenix back in the spring, and if you remember back to that race, Truex wasn’t super fast until about the halfway point. He still has a shot at this Championship.

Christopher Bell – We talked about him last weekend, and even though he disappointed quite a bit at Martinsville, I’m going to go ahead and talk about Christopher Bell again this weekend. The short, flat tracks are where CBell thrives. When you take out Martinsville, he has three top 5s in the four races on this track type in 2021, with a 9th-place finish here at Phoenix back in the spring the only exception there. That gives Bell the 3rd-best average finish on this track type in 2021. In practice this weekend, the #20 Toyota was just a bit off on speed, but Christopher qualified in 8th on Saturday and should be able to contend for a finish better than his 11th-place prediction by the algorithm.

Practice is finished, the starting lineup has been set, and now we just have to line these cars up and go racing on Sunday afternoon. The Season Finale 500 from Phoenix is scheduled to start around 3:34 pm ET and after 312 laps (or more) are completed, we’ll have a new Cup Series champion crowned. It’s been a great 2021 season and I hope you’ve had a great year on this site and playing this Slingshot Fantasy Auto Contest. Now let’s finish the season strong!!

Remember: NASCAR doesn’t award Stage points to the Championship 4 drivers, but in this game every eligible driver will accumulate Stage points as normal. All scoring this weekend is the same as it’s been all year.

*Please note: the picks and suggestions below are my opinions and strategy for the Slingshot Fantasy Auto Contest. These are not meant to sway your thinking in any way, but rather give you insight into the drivers I am most likely to pick on race day.*

The Safe

Denny Hamlin ($12,400) – The Championship Four drivers have a good chance of running 1-2-3-4 on Sunday afternoon, so picking any of those guys not starting inside the top 5 is a good strategy in the Slingshot Fantasy Auto Contest because of the slight place differential potential. In other words, Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex, Jr. this weekend. As far as Hamlin goes, he’s finished top 5 in four of the last five Phoenix races and he starts 6th in the season finale on Sunday. The #11 Toyota wasn’t stellar in practice on Friday, but it was fast enough, and Hamlin has the best average running position and 2nd-best average finish on similar tracks to Phoenix this year. Dennis has scored the 2nd-most Slingshot fantasy points this season and should be able to come away with another great score here on Sunday.

Martin Truex, Jr. ($12,300) – I don’t think you can pass up Martin Truex, Jr. this weekend. He starts 12th because the #19 Toyota has lacked short run speed since they unloaded it. But as far as long run speed, Truex was one of the best in practice on Friday, and that’s what it’s going to take to be really good during the race on Sunday. Truex won the Phoenix race here back in March of this season and this team brought the exact same car to race with on Sunday. I don’t know if MTJ can complete the season sweet and grab his second Cup title this weekend, but I’d be surprised if he didn’t finish top 5. He has won two of the four races on shorter, flat tracks this season (excluding Martinsville, although he also won there this year).

Joey Logano ($11,600) – In practice on Friday, the Penske cars came to play. They may have whiffed (big time) at Martinsville last week, but if any three of these guys were still contending for a Championship, I think they’d have a decent chance at taking it. As far as Logano goes, he was technically the slowest of the three, but that doesn’t really concern me. History has shown that when two of the three teammates have speed in practice, most of the time the other one has similar speed during the race. Logano led 143 laps here at Phoenix back in the March race and has finished inside the top 3 in each of the last three races here. He’s also finished inside the top 5 in all four similar shorter, flat track races this season. Logano starts 10th for the Season Finale 500 so he has a little bit of place differential potential as well.

The Risky

Kyle Larson ($12,600) – There are only two minor reasons why Kyle Larson is a little risky in the Slingshot Fantasy Auto Contest this weekend. First: he’s starting on the pole, so he can’t get any positive place differential points. And two: the #5 Chevrolet fell off a ton on the long run during practice on Friday. Now, with that being said, I don’t think we’ll see Larson fall off like that in the race, especially since his teammate, Chase Elliott, had great long run speed, but it’s still a little concerning. The short run speed is definitely there in this #5 Chevrolet, as evidenced by his super fast qualifying lap, and if Cliff Daniels can have somewhat similar speed to that on the long run on Sunday, we could see an absolute domination by Larson as he grabs his 10th win of the season and the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Championship.

Ryan Blaney ($10,600) – Ryan Blaney looks to have a race-contending car this weekend. The #12 Ford was super fast off of the truck, posting the 7th-fastest lap in practice while also ranking best in 10-lap average and 3rd-fastest in 15-lap average. As far as Phoenix goes specifically, Young Ryan Blaney finished 3rd in both races here in 2019, but don’t forget that that rules package was significantly different than what the teams are racing now. Still, Blaney’s last two Phoenix starts have ended with 10th- and 6th-place finishes, and it wouldn’t be overly surprising to see him run top 5 on Sunday. He starts 4th, though, which adds to the risk in picking him in this game.

Alex Bowman ($10,400) – Fresh off of his 4th win of the season, Alex Bowman heads into the season finale race with a 14th-place starting spot, which would usually make one of the Hendrick Motorsports drivers a great Slingshot pick due to the place differential potential. Just be careful, though. For whatever reason, Alex Bowman has just not figured Phoenix Raceway out, except for the 2016 race when he dominated it and finished 6th. Since then, Bowman has no finish better than 13th here, and has just four top 10 Stage finishes as well (in 14 chances). With that being said, Bowman did win at Richmond earlier this year–which is a track very similar to Phoenix–and obviously is coming off of a great Martinsville race, which is another short, flat track (although quite different than Phoenix).

The Winner

“Race Winner” Pick = Chase Elliott The algorithm says Chase is going to repeat as Champion on Sunday, so I’m just going to roll with that as my race winner pick. He’s obviously the defending winner of this race and has finished 5th, 1st, and 7th in the last three Phoenix races. In practice on Friday, the #9 Chevrolet had good short run and long run speed, ranking 3rd-fastest in 10-lap average and 2nd-fastest in 15-lap average.

FanDuel NASCAR Driver Projections for the Phoenix Finale

Phoenix Raceway is where we will crown the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion, as there are 312 laps scheduled around this one-mile flat track on Sunday afternoon. It’ll come down to Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, and Martin Truex, Jr. for the Championship, and likely the race as well. This will also cap off the 2021 DFS NASCAR season, so thank you for following along all season long! Hopefully these projections were able to help you win some money this year.

Optimal Lineup According to Jordan’s Projections

The optimal FanDuel lineup for Phoenix on Sunday afternoon according to my Projections is:

  • Martin Truex, Jr.
  • Joey Logano
  • Kevin Harvick
  • Aric Almirola
  • Tyler Reddick

Confidence Rating = 6.3/10. Don’t really hate this one, but it’s hard to see any of these drivers leading significant laps except mayybeee Martin Truex, Jr. This lineup is relatively safe but I’m not sure it has a great chance of being optimal.

It all comes down to this. With the season finale being here at Phoenix on Sunday, NASCAR allowed teams to practice and actually qualify the race cars before we line them up and go racing one last time in 2021. Most people expect the four Championship drivers to be up front for most of the day on Sunday, but there are a couple drivers on the outside looking in that could end up spoiling the party.
